I'm always emptying it out so it doesn't smell when I turn the vacuum on. I didn't want a bagged vacuum because of the smell. But I heard this was a great vacuum and it would not bother my allergies. So I bought it on many recommendations - I cleaned with one bag for a couple of weeks and the bag got very full, but it didn't smell! That was the clincher for me. I'm really happy with this vacuum. It's a great cleaner that doesn't smell!!! I like the way I am able to get into every crack and corner. It is very easy to move around. I'm very pleased. It has GREAT suction when the carpet attachment is on, but to switch to bare floor it hardly does anything. You have to use the hard floor end to get anything off of hardwoods. The worst part is though, the bags don't seem to fit quite right into the canister. I ended up having to use my old vacuum to clean out the inside of the canister. It's gross and it doesn't work well. I'm very disappointed and looking for a new vacuum, again.
